What To Do When Your Car Won’t Start (Troubleshooting Guide)
A non-starting car can ruin your day—but don’t panic! Follow these steps to diagnose and fix the issue (or decide when to call for help).

Step 1: Identify the Symptoms
🔹 No sound at all? → Likely a dead battery or bad starter.
🔹 Clicking noise? → Weak battery or faulty starter.
🔹 Engine cranks but won’t start? → Fuel, spark, or air issue.
🔹 Starts then dies? → Fuel pump, alternator, or security system problem.
Step 2: Quick Fixes to Try
🔋 Dead Battery?
✅ Jump-start it (if lights/dash are weak):

Connect jumper cables: Red (+) to dead battery → Red (+) to donor battery → Black (-) to donor battery → Black (-) to unpainted metal on dead car.

Start the donor car, wait 2 mins, then try starting yours.
If it starts, drive for 20+ mins to recharge the battery.
🚨 Still dead? Battery may need replacement (or check alternator).
⛽ Out of Gas?
✅ Check the fuel gauge (yes, really!).
✅ Listen for the fuel pump humming when you turn the key (no sound = pump issue).
🔑 Ignition/Key Issue?
✅ Try the spare key (if push-to-start, hold fob near the start button).
✅ Wiggle the steering wheel while turning the key (steering lock may be stuck).
🚗 Security System Lockout?
✅ Lock/unlock doors with the fob.
✅ Disconnect the battery for 10 mins to reset the system.
Step 3: If the Engine Cranks But Won’t Start
Possible causes: No fuel, no spark, or no air.
🛢️ Fuel Issues
✔ Smell gas? Flooded engine—press the gas pedal fully while cranking.
✔ No gas smell? Fuel pump, filter, or injector problem.
⚡ Spark Issues
✔ Older car? Tap the starter lightly with a tool while someone turns the key.
✔ Check spark plugs (if worn, replace them).
🌬️ Airflow Problems
✔ Check for a clogged air filter (remove and try starting).
Step 4: When to Call for Help
🚑 Call a mechanic if:
You smell burning or gas leaks.
The battery keeps dying (alternator issue).
The engine makes grinding noises.
You’ve tried everything and it still won’t start.
