What Should You Do After an Automobile Accident?

Posted on June 2, 2025 by admin

Being involved in a car accident can be stressful and overwhelming, but staying calm and taking the right steps can protect your safety, legal rights, and insurance claims. Here’s what to do after an automobile accident:

1. Ensure Safety First
Check for injuries: Assess yourself and others for injuries. Call 911 immediately if anyone is hurt.

Move to a safe location (if possible) to avoid further collisions—turn on hazard lights and use flares or cones if available.

Do not leave the scene unless it’s dangerous to stay.

2. Call the Police
Even for minor accidents, a police report can be crucial for insurance claims.

Cooperate with officers but avoid admitting fault—stick to the facts.

3. Exchange Information
Get the following from the other driver(s):

Name, phone number, and address

Driver’s license & license plate number

Insurance details (company and policy number)

If the driver isn’t the owner, get the vehicle owner’s info as well.

4. Document the Scene
Take photos/videos of:

Vehicle damage (all angles)

License plates

Road conditions, traffic signs, and skid marks

Injuries (if any)

Get witness contact info (if applicable).

5. Notify Your Insurance Company
Report the accident as soon as possible, even if it’s minor.

Provide only factual information—avoid speculation or blame.

6. Seek Medical Attention (If Needed)
Some injuries (like whiplash) may not be immediately apparent.

Keep records of medical visits and treatments.
