Here are some quick fixes for common car problems you can often handle yourself:
1. Dead Battery
Jump-start: Use jumper cables and another car. Connect red to red (+), black to black (-) on the donor car, then ground the last black on a metal part of your car. Start the donor car, then yours.
Check terminals: Clean corrosion with baking soda & water. Tighten loose connections.
2. Flat Tire
Use a spare: Jack up the car, remove the flat, and install the spare (donut tires have limited speed/distance).
Tire plug kit: For small punctures, insert a plug to temporarily seal the leak (not for sidewall damage).
3. Overheating Engine
Turn off A/C, turn on heater: Helps dissipate heat.
Pull over & let cool: Check coolant level (only when cool!). Add a 50/50 mix of coolant & water if low.
Check for leaks: Look under the car for coolant puddles.
4. Engine Won’t Start (But Lights Work)
Tap the starter: Lightly tap it with a tool while someone turns the key.
Check fuel: Out of gas? Try adding some.
Faulty ignition switch: Jiggle the key or try a spare.
